NELSON-HOME

Round 4 at Racetown couldn’t have gone any better.  After spending the whole week prior in Oakhurst riding Grizzly’s for the 2011 brochure and ad shoot I was a little worried going into the race weekend without having ridden my YFZ-R in more than a week.  Saturday started well with me riding the early morning Unclassified race to knock the rust off.  The track was fast and fun as it was completely smooth for the morning session.

Saturday afternoon was the pro practice with timed qualifying for gate pick in Sunday’s main event.  I did my fast lap as soon as the green flag waived and while my lap wasn’t perfect, it was good enough to take the top spot with a 9:25.41 over Jeremie Warnia’s 9:25.48.  That’s right, only .07 of a second difference between first and second qualifiers, Josh Frederick was third, 4 seconds back.

Sunday’s main event started great with my #94 YFZ 450R pulling me to the holeshot.  Warnia was close behind and pressured me for the first couple laps until he crashed while trying to pass me on the outside entering a one lined corner.  He got up next to me down a rough straight and tried to squeeze in where there was no room, his front wheel turned pretty hard into my nerf bar and then I saw him tumble over the berm from the corner of my eye.  After that I had about 10 seconds of breathing room over Frederick.  I settled down after about 4 laps and began to smooth out and ride my lines like I wanted.  From there my lead began to grow, eventually getting up to about a minute before I rode very conservative for the final couple laps and brought it home to take the win with about 40 seconds over Frederick and Warnia around 3 minutes back in third.

Special thanks to Motoworks, who has been working on improving power and keeping the bike quiet enough for the sound tests.  Elka and Roll Design have really been working hard with me to improve my offroad suspension package and we have made great improvements.  This was my first WORCS race with the new shocks and we obviously had great results.

Results:
1)  Dustin Nelson     Yam
2)  Josh Frederick    Can
3)  Jeremie Warnia   Can
4)  Beau Baron        Hon
5)  Josh Row           Hon

Thanks Everyone,

Dustin Nelson #94

Hi !

I just wanted to let you guys know that I put a set of shocks on my boy’s quad over the weekend. He was 3 times faster with the Elka shocks than with his stock setup. He didn’t have all the head whip that he had before and enjoyed his riding more. Being that he is only 5 years old, he didn’t give me much feedback!

I have always liked your stuff on my roadracing bike but to see the little one improve so much by just putting shocks on his bike made me very happy.

THE NELSON REPORT
Yamaha/ITP Quadcross Series Round 2 Arizona Cycle Park, Buckeye, AZ 4/11/10
Round two of the 2010 Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was held at ACP in Buckeye, AZ. The track layout is fun with lots of jumps, including a 100ft. plus uphill triple step up. We had our first warm race of the year with temperatures in the low 90’s. The high temps, along with a little wind made for a very dry, blue groove race track. The heat and tough track conditions would definitely play a part in the out come with the new 20 minute plus 2 lap motos putting more emphasis on fitness than the shorter motos of the past.
Moto 1: The drama started before the gate dropped in moto one with Jason Dunkleberger being pulled from the line when his kill tether did not work upon inspection. Dunk had about 10 minutes to try and fix it but did not make it back for the start of the race. When the gate finally did drop, my #94 YFZ 450R pulled me to a great holeshot with John Shafe rounding the first turn second and Justin Noss third. I had clear track ahead and tried to make the best of it as I immediately started pulling a gap. Noss and Beau Baron made the pass on Shafe in turn three to move themselves into second and third right away. During the first half of the moto I was able to pull away by about 8 seconds while Noss and Baron battled for second. Baron made many pass attempts but finally made one stick as Noss took the outside for a better run at the uphill triple and Baron snuck by on the inside at about the 15 minute mark. The positions would stay the same for the rest of the moto, so when the checkers flew I took the win by 10 seconds over Baron in second, Noss in third, Shafe rode the best I’ve seen from him in a while for fourth and Jason Fife rounded out the top five.
Moto 2: My YFZ-R once again pulled me to a convincing holeshot to collect the $250 GYTR Holeshot Award. Shafe again followed me through turn one but this time Dunk was back and slotted into the third spot. Noss and Baron couldn’t stay away from each other and were once again nose to tail entering turn three. They went three wide trying to pass to the front but got together and their bikes became tangled. They would have a very similar battle to the one they had in the first moto, only this time it was starting from the back of the pack as it took valuable seconds to get the bikes apart. Out front, I once again had clear sailing and by lap four had built up a ten second lead over Dunk, who had made the pass into second on lap two. I was able to back it down to a more comfortable pace for the remainder of the moto as the top three positions held solid. Noss and Baron worked their way through the rest of the pack with Baron eventually getting by Noss. I crossed the line fifteen seconds ahead of Dunk to take the moto win, Shafe was a strong third with Baron making it to fourth and Noss fifth.
Dustin comments: “Round two of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series went very well for me, two holeshots and two moto wins. That’s what we set out for every time we show up to the track and I haven’t had a race this dominating in a while. This track had many jumps with flat landings and landings into holes but the shocks worked pretty well. I’m really looking forward to the next race at Rynoland on May 9th. This is a new venue for us and I always like the challenge of figuring out a new track.”

Widen

Hey just back from the first round of USA Cycling National Gravity Tour. This was the official start to the 2010 USA Cycling National Mtb downhill race season. The race was out in the Santa Ynez Valley area. The hills where really green and there where lots of wine vineyards.

This was the first stop on my schedule for the 2010 race season. I started the season off great with a podium finish at 3rd place. It was a great confidence booster for me headed into the season with starting it off with a podium spot. It felt great to step up on the podium with the top pros of our country.

The Elka Stage 5 rear shock ran amazing all weekend long. I didn’t have to change much on the shock other than adding a little more low speed compression so i didn’t have much pedaling bob and it would run higher in the travel. Also I took out some rebound, cause it had flat loose off camber corners and I wanted to have maximum amount of traction in the flat corners.

Great way to start the season!

Thanks !

Jon Widen
