2016 was the 10th year that the Desert Toyz race team would line up for the world famous Baja 500. Boy has the UTV class progressed in the last 10 years!! Unfortunately, the start of the race would again be delayed due to a vehicle striking a spectator in the first few miles. This year’s accident was especially sad because it was a young boy that was killed. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Please go to the families go fund me page “The Hendricks Family” to donate and help them during this time of grievance.
Once the race got back under way, the heat of the day had really set in! Cory felt like this would give his Can-Am Maverick Turbo a slight advantage because his Maverick works very well in the extreme heat. Of course after all that had happened in the first few miles, already Cory decided to just take a slow pace off the line and enjoy the sights and smells of Mexico. Just as Cory started settling into a nice pace, at rm 28 he approached a huge race jam. There were 30+ cars all lined up waiting for their turn at a very steep, silty hill. Cory and his navigator, Denise, spent over 2 hours getting through the bottleneck.

Once they made their way through, Cory and Denise set a consistent pace through some of the most rough terrain and difficult sections of the course. They arrived at the dry lake bed and made a quick stop for fuel and water. Our race plan was to make a driver/navigator change at rm 250. The change went smoothly and Scott and Jason drove off into the night, only 5+ minutes behind the leader. Scott and Jason did suffer some shock issues that slowed them down but they were determined to put the Can-Am Maverick Turbo on the podium. Tigerlights turned the night into day and allowed them to run clean. These lights are durable, reliable and provide a crystal clear beam of light. Passing three cars and driving aggressively, yet smart, Scott was making up time on his competitors. He had to pit for fuel at rm 360 and from there he took the Can-Am Maverick Turbo across the finish line around 3 A.M.

Desert Toyz had a great race and finished on the podium in third place! This would not be possible without every one of our generous sponsors.
