This years San Felipe 250 actually turned out to be a San Felipe 350. We came to this race with only one day of testing on a brand new car but still felt confident with our chances. We were looking forward to the extra miles on a course notorious for being rough and rocky. We had a game plan to start in the back of the pack and requested a rear start. Unfortunately my stiffest competition had the same idea… We had about an 11am start time and by mile 60 our plan for starting in the back was paying off… We were 1st on time having just passed a sidelined Wayne Matlock. It wouldn’t last long as we had to stop on the dry lake bed to change a failed tire and as a result we got passed by 4 other competitors. By mile 170 we were back on our game running physical 2nd and chasing down 1st place, Wayne Matlock. We managed to get by him going over the summit but because of a poor line choice he was able to regain the position. Coming into our second pit at mile 260 we were a few minutes back from the lead but having to change 2 wounded tires in the pit we would leave 5 minutes down. We were back at it and gaining ground when I tagged a rock with the rear wheel resulting in a destroyed rim. We had to stop for a second time out on the trail and change a tire. After the time consuming tire change we decided to change our game plan and go from pushing to catch 1st place to salvaging a much needed 2nd place spot on the podium. We are excited to start the SCORE series with a solid podium finish and look forward to working out the bugs in the new car. We’ll be going for the win at the Baja 500!
